1- About Forbidden
Forbidden, is a novel written by Tabitha Suzuma and released on the 27th May 2010. It is about controversial and thoughtful topics such as incest or dysfunctional family (which is seldom the case in YA books).
BUT this novel is not disgusting and creepy at all, even though it is about incest. The way it is narrated and the way it is written is absolutely amazing ; this book makes you see the subject of incest quite differently because it is more about true love and the barrier of being siblings than about sexual abuses and insane relationship.
Forbidden is known as an heartbreaking and stirring novel which let you at loss of words, because of the topic and the intricacy of the story.
The synopsis : She is pretty and talented - sweet sixteen and never been kissed. He is seventeen; gorgeous and on the brink of a bright future. And now they have fallen in love. But... they are brother and sister.
Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As defacto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives—and the way they understand each other so completely—has also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: a love this devastating has no happy ending.
Note : This book is not suitable for young readers. If you want to read it anyway, be sure that you are mature enough.
2- Brief thoughts.
THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING.
I absolutely loved Forbidden and to best honest, i don’t even know where to start ! Actually i am just at a loss of words. Really.
This book was unbelievable, stunning and at some point fascinating. When i started it, I didn’t know what to expect ; the subject of incest is really sensitive and I was afraid to read something cliché.
Fortunately, it was not the case.
The relationship between Maya and Lochan is complicated from the beginning, they have always been more soulmates than brother and sister.
It’s when their father disappears and their mother becomes the worst mother in the entire world they realize that they love each other. They have a lot of responsibilities such as pay the bills, look after their siblings, hide everything from the social services.. At this point of the story, they only have each other to survive.
When Maya and Lochan decided to assume their love despite everything, i didn’t feel disgusted. People always find that it sounds disgusting but you have to read the entire novel to know that it’s not.
Things arrive slowly and we have the time to discover that the feelings they hide to each other aren’t recent. Tabitha Suzuma managed to make their love relationship seem so right and I never felt outraged during the whole book.
The topic of incest is also well-covered, it is not cliché, not vulgar. The illustrations are bursting with life, the entire novel is beautiful and sensitive. The author makes you think about a lot of things, disassemble the notion of good and bad...after all, is incest bad if it is true love ?
Maya and Lochan know that what they are doing is wrong, but why does it make them feel so right ?
It may sounds excessive but this novel is art ; it makes you think, gives you the need to express your opinion about the topic matter and makes you have so much feelings.
(Plus it is not all about incest, there is a whole story and a whole universe behind Maya’s and Lochan’s relationship.)
Before talking about the characters, I have to talk about the last few chapters. THESE CHAPTERS ARE THE DEFINITION OF A PAGE TURNER.
You have to know that I never ever cry for a book but this one was an exception. At the end, my eyes were wet, my hands were shaking, my mind blanked and i felt empty ; It takes me time to realize what happened, to realize that the story was over. I was exhausted emotionally and psychologically after read this book
After read this novel, you don’t only feel sad, you feel empty and devastated. Forbidden blew my mind and I will never forget it !
You should all read this book, even if you are against incest because Maya’s and Lochan’s relationship is so much more than these six letters and it will makes you see things differently.
Plus, Forbidden has more to bring you than a plain romantic story, there’s lessons and moral behind the story.
READ IT !
3 - About the characters
As you know, there’s five main characters in this novel : Lochan, Maya, Kit, Tiffin, Willa.
All of them grew up too fast because of bad parents, and I can’t help myself have pity for them. They have a difficult life, they live in an horrendous setting and it’s so unfair because they are absolutely endearing ! They deserve better !
I won’t talk too much about Lochan and Maya because I already talked about both of them, and I will probably cry if I have to do it again ; they are such brave people, they are amazing and so much more.
Kit, is the third child of the family ; he is a fragile boy and during half of the book he is appalled towards everybody. He finds his life unfair and to forget the dreadful daily-life, he starts to smoke and drink to the great despair of Maya and Lochan.
I didn’t really liked Kit because in my opinion, he was not respectful with his siblings and he always made things worse. It is only at the end of the book that I started to appreciate him, because he became more mature !
Tiffin, is the fourth child of the family and the third boy ! He is a young, dynamic and punchy kid that always wants more. He is really close to Willa and i found him adorable. He is a bit naive and it is sometimes good thing, and sometimes a bad thing.
Willa, is the last child and the little princess of the family. She is literally the CUTEST little girl i’ve ever seen. She is dynamic, cute and she always has the smile. She’s very close to Maya and I can’t help smiling when they were together.
(And for those who read the book, yes i cried when she talked with Maya in the epilogue)
About the mother, i don’t know what to say. I really hated this characters and I think she doesn’t deserve anything. She is such a bad mother, she..I’m at loss of words !! I hate so much this woman for her attitude, for being blind about her problems, for give up her family…In my opinion, she’s not even a mother !
4- Quotes :
To conclude, Forbidden was an unforgettable reading that blew my mind and makes me think about many things.
I think everyone should read it because it is so much heart touching that it hurts, and it is a really beautiful novel with important topics that we should be more aware about.
